A Resolutioner’s Reality Check

It is the close of the last Friday of the first month of 2011.  How are you making out with your new year’s resolutions?

Chances are, like me, you’ve made promises to improve various aspects of your life ranging from basic health/fitness goals to scratching off some major items on your bucket list.

Today’s message is short: Keep your eye on the prize. (As my mother would say…)

Oprah says that it takes 21 days to create a habit.

So assuming those resolutions kicked-in after the “holidays” (which is the first built in excuse we give ourselves), let’s estimate that your resolution period began on or before the first Friday in January (January 7th) That would mean today is your 21st  day and you have arrived!

Congratulations! If you stayed the course diligently since, then, (according to Oprah) you are well on your way to achieving all of your goals in 2011. Keep your eye on the prize.

Now….

For the rest of us, there are a few more steps on our journey.  Or to be more precise, there is more work to do. Keep your eye on the prize.

Here is a quick list that may help:

  • Find tools and real-life motivators that support your progress and remind you of the “why.”
  • Set up a FREE Basecamp account to help you list and manage your “to-dos”
  • Identify 10 minutes at the beginning or end of each day to track your progress and reward yourself with the accomplishment of each step toward your big picture goal.

No matter what your goal, stay encouraged by developing and executing a plan for progress.  Find an accountability partner you trust and get to work…..

Keep your eye on the prize.

Bloggers Note: Since I mentioned Oprah, I’ll also share that my blog inspiration came while reading the January 2011 edition of The Oprah Magazine. I stopped reading and starting writing at the end of page 47.  The was the first page of Suze Orman’s , “Your Money Blueprint for 2011.” Her month-by-month breakdown reminded me of a goal that I am accomplishing for myself. Thank you, Oprah.
